Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, individuals can request access to any record held by government institutions, including York Regional Police. Requests for copies of police reports - excluding motor vehicle collision reports and proof of loss reports, which are available through the Customer Service Unit - must be made through the Freedom of Information Unit.

The Freedom of Information Unit ensures all federal and provincial laws are upheld when information is provided to members of the public. For example a request for a police report that contains the personal information of others can only be released with the consent of those individuals.

How to Make a Freedom of Information Request

Requests can be made at the front desk of York Regional Police headquarters, located at 47 Don Hillock Drive, Aurora. Applicants will be asked to fill out a Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act form and pay a legislated $5 application fee. York Regional Police can only accept cash (exact change only) or cheque/money order made payable to York Regional Police. Effective March 1, 2016, FOI requests can also be received at the Customer Service Unit located at the Community Resource Centre, Monday to Friday,  8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The front reception desk at HQ will also continue accepting the FOI requests Monday to Fridays between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please note, applicants will be asked to provide photo identification at the time of the request.

Requests can also be made in writing by completing the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act form and mailing it to:
